A great gameplay preview – Rogue, Necro & Ranger

Shows a few combat moves and special abilities from a rogue, a necromancer and a ranger. Although the video has gone through considerable compression, you can still see how fantastic Vanguard’s graphics really are.

Monk Starting Missions

The Kojani human starting area is very cool. I started a monk there myself, and was intrigued by the storyline they introduce you into. You start out as a soldier of the empire doing the bidding of your senior officers slaughtering and pillaging. Your concience gets the best of you though as you struggle to do what you know is right. The sequences unfold pretty interestingly – I’m glad to see this depth of story telling involved so early in the game.

Silly little Vanguard SOH Video Clip

Heh – Looks like we’re already starting to see people sharing their Vanguard experience on Youtube & Google Video. It’s really easy to get a clip using free video capture software (ie Fraps.com) and get ut up there on Youtube & Google videos, and it seems like a good way to promote the game over the next couple of months to help get people aware of its release!

Vanguard Diplomacy : An early look at MMORPG Diplomacy

Sigil has introduced a number of unique features to the MMORPG world with Vanguard : Saga of Heroes. From free-flying mounts, to several unique races & classes, to a whole new way of looking at crafting to a whole new feature all togather – diplomacy.

I hadn’t seen a video of Vanguard’s diplomacy feature yet, so I thought I’d share one for those of you who haven’t tried it yet or aren’t yet in beta. It really is interesting how they’ve integrated this element into the gameplay.

Diplomacy is a card game. The player and the NPC each select cards from their deck to play against one another. Each player gets points which move a marker towards the player when the player is winning the conversation, or back towards the NPC when the player begins to lose ground.

Different cards are worth different point values, and may require certain points already be pooled befre they can be played. There is a bit more detailed explaination in the Diplomacy section of out Vanguard MMORPG forums

Sigil’s Vanguard : Saga of Heroes (VG) is a noted pioneer MMORPG in many ways, not the least of which is free flying airborne mounts. This unique travel feature puts you at the reins of some awesome looking transportation from dragons (drakes) to winged horses (pegasus). MTV Interviews WOW Gold Farmers

Everyone who has played an MMORPG in the last few years has likely played WOW and is probably aware of websites like IGE.com and the gold farmers (predominately Chinese youths) who supply them with hundreds and thousands of virtual gold pieces.

What does it mean to the average player and how does it affect the gaming experience of the innocent players who do not stoop to external means to get ahead in the game? It’s often at the core of some heated forum debate or trade channel flaming session.

This video clip has MTV talking to some of the top players in the virtual gold/platinum market that feeds WOW and other massively popular MMORPGs.

Sony Online Entertainment and Sigil Games Online today released a narrated video tour of “Vanguard: Saga of Heroes” complete with in-depth commentary by creators Brad McQuaid and Jeff Butler. The demo showcases the freedom available to players in Vanguard and highlights features such as deep character customization, player-created housing and ships, massive adventure areas, and visually spectacular combat.

Running & Fighting in Video Preview

A simple preview video that follows a character as he walks, runs, interacts with his environment and does a little fighting. Fantastic clarity in these environments, but I’m guessing the system this was recorded on was “top o’ the line” – so if your system doesn’t meet the system requirements you still have time for upgrades before release.

Necromancer Combat Preview Video

Heres a quick preview of a Necromancer class character doing some damage. Interesting – the 2 ‘pets’ ravage the enemies while the Necromancer stands off to the side orchestrating the attacks – then closes in on the corpse to collect loot and harvest elements.

Vanguard Video Previews : Character Creation & Customization

Vanguard has some of the best character creation & customization options in the MMORPG industry. Reminiscent of COH (City of Heroes) each character in Vanguards massive environment will be as unique as the players imaginations can concieve. In addition to the standard skin tones, hair style & color etc Vanguard hands the character moedl controls over to players. Most notable are the abilities to fully customize your body shape size girth etc, and the absolute total control you have over your characters facial appearance.

Bodywork
Not just classes, equipment & a few variations per race – with Vanguard every element of your characters appearance seems to be customizable. Height and girth can be adjusted in several different ways using 3-4 slider bars so the general body shapes can range from tall & slend to short and stocky, to tall and muscular, to small & wiry and a million variations in between. Adjust one slider and your avatars chest can go from junior high PE to MR. Olympia, or from training bra to indecently endowed. And thats just the body mass/height/shape adjustments.

Give your avatar a facelift
Adjust your characters facial features for truely unique appearance – set your face’s general shape, width & height, shape your chin, adjust cheek bones, shape, size & position your lips, set your eye position, size, shape, color, adjust nose position, shape & size….you get the idea.

Racial Traits
While there are a stagering array of options, each race will have some limitations in keeping with their individual racial traits, (IE humans probably won’t have the option of greenish skin, while orcs & goblins will be restricted to a primarily green skin-tone pallet). Other racial trait features may include customizable spikes, tusks, whiskers, claws and adjustable pointed ears.

Vanguard Preview Video : Unicorn Mount

Again, another special mount available only to higher level players. A brilliant white unicorn complete with horn and goatee. There are several special mounts above and beyond the standard horse. Mounts are an absolute necesity in this vast world so you get a standard horse at around level 10, but these special mounts (including flying mounts later in the game) are faster and may have unique abilities - so it looks like we have something to look forward to.

Darek walks through the entire process of creating a character, including race, class and many, many physical features of the character including height, weight, body mass, shape, hair & eye color, facial features down to minute characteristics such as nose shape & pitch, ear size and eye brows.

Thats just the base character creation – later the clothing, armor and other gear adds even more layers to the customization and uniqueness of your characters. I’ve heard it a few times before from Sigil folks, but it bears repeating. No 2 characters have to turn out looking the same (unlike other MMORPGs of the past).

It’s a unique form of travel not seen since the days of Ultima Online (at least not ships you could own and self navigate). This is just a quick-n-dirty preview of that element.
