Posted by Draedus in Vanguard News

Brad McQuaid dropped a few lines in the Sony VG Station forum to let all the diehard Vanguard fans in on the latest. Like most of Brad’s posts this one is quite verbose but can be summed up in a few sentances.

You can read his whole post here but it can be summed up (as can most of Brad’s verbose posts) in a few sentences.

    • SOE may or may not buy out Sigil
    • Sigil needs more time and more money to make the game work right
    • Brad admits the game requires a top rate system (not just video upgrades), but by end of 2007 people should be buying new PCs anyways (huh…?)
    • the game needs a “re-launch once its finished (a soft admittance that it is incomplete in its current state…still)
    • Brad has lots of ideas about what could possibly one day, maybe eventually be in the game (definately take those with a grain of salt)
(this next one is my favorite)
    • “…both Sigil and SOE see the potential of a mind blowing game by the end of the year”
      [summary of http://forums.station.sony.com/vg/posts/list.m?topic_id=8569]

This comes as longtime fans are becoming more and more vocal about their concerns and dissappointments. From what I hear from friends and fellow fans it sounds like more and more VG players are starting to speak with their $$ by suspending or not renewing their subscriptions. Many of these players are diehard VG fans and aren’t necesarrily leaving the game for good - but I hear a lot of ‘I’m taking a break while they finish the game’.

At any rate over the next 6 months expect…

    • SOE to aquire Sigil and/or Vanguard
    • patches and bug fixes to continue to trickle into the game, although perhaps more significant progress on performance & bug fixes
    • to buy a new PC (or upgrade your current system…alot)
    • a re-launch of the game [first launch of the completed game] (probably in time for the 2007 Holiday season – thats just a guess)

If SOE buys or dosnt buy. Either way this is a great game with tons of potential. If SOE buys I truley hope they stick with this formula. I believe theyve created a game above all others. Some MMORPGs ive played are truley to easy. This one is challenging. I have heard many compliments within the game of how theyve done great justice to the charactors and there attributes.

There are just so many big issues with this game, it’s really tough to justify “a great game next year.”
People coming from WOW, EQ, DAOC, they are expecting “better” and gamers don’t like to wait around.

When predecessor games have easily mastered all of the following:
-grouping without losing connection or having constant problems (still frustrating)
      -raiding groups (not implemented),
-guild structure and management, alliances between guilds (not implemented),
-alternate advancement structure to show uniqueness between classes (not implemented),
-stopping hackers and gold dup’ing that ruins the economy

Lets face it… it’s difficult to be a Vanguard fan.

I personally don’t care if it’s run by Sigil or SOE, because the damage has already been done. Sure its fixable, but permanent damage has already capsized the ship. There are people who were looking forward to this game as the next major MMORPG and it has turned out to flop massively. Those people, the hardcore players, that have seen the problems and left, will never come back. The word of mouth advertising has hurt the game, and will continue to do so, regardless of what they fix. The only thing a game has is momentum, until another game steals it. This game never gained momentum, because it never really had much success.

I guess my main point is that a game should have potential, yes that is a good thing. But when a game has a weak foundation, how do you expect people to play with dreams of potential? McQuaid keeps stating the potential as though people are going to play for several years—guess what, they are already quitting in large numbers. Expectations were blown, frustration is setting in, playability is just not up to par.

Everyone I talk to is already talking about Conan and Warhammer, both on the horizon in the next year. Those are the big ones, I’m sure there are others. Unfortunately, I think the window for a successful Vanguard has come to and end. It’s just an opinion, but I think it was a piss poor attempt at success.

As a longtime fan of Vanguard I have a deep rooted loyalty to the game, despite its failure (so far) to live up to it’s much-promoted potential. I find that although I’m often quite frustrated with the glitches, bugs and exploits in the game, I’m still a huge fan of the things they have gotten right.

While there is a lot to be frustrated about (catch me on an ‘off day’ and I’ll likely fill you in on every bug I’ve encountered and reported – repeatedly – and how it somehow ruined my life etc) there is still a lot about Vanguard worth salvaging.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with many VG detractors in their argument that releasing the unfinished game with all of its issues have marked it for many gamers, which has REALLY, REALLY injured its potential.

While it may never reach the potential we’d all hoped for – I still hold on to a hope that SOE will buy Sigil soon and quickly complete VG with-out screwing it up more. I think a completed VG can re-release in Q4 and still capture quite a player base. I think the core ideas of VG are strong enough to survive the controversy and make their way into the center ring to compete with the other big offerings out there.

      What can I say – I’m an optimist and a diehard Vanguard fan(atic) :D

P.S. Catch me on Targanor (Orc Ranger Draedus) when I die because of a laggy chunk border, or when I get a ‘Buy some Vanguard g0ld’ letter in my mail and see how optimistic I am – heh
